Additional info related to the Local Links page: Canyon Lake is not only a "weekend getaway" for its own residents, but it is also located in the midst of one of the most entertainment-rich, sports-intensive and culturally-endowed areas in the entire United States. For a day's outing from Canyon, the choices are remarkable: From surfing the ocean to snow skiing in Wrightwood or Big Bear. From sailing the bay in San Diego to basking in the warmth of Palm Springs. From visiting the Getty or the Huntington near Los Angeles, to riding the "teacups" at Disneyland, or visiting "Independence Hall" at Knott's. The choices seem endless. But much of the very best of it all is to be found in Canyon Lake itself, and the surrounding communities. In Temecula's wine country, the meandering roads ramble on and on for miles with charming wineries, fine dining, and entertainment; and in Temecula's Old Town, the wild west is alive and well. For Canyon Lakers who find their friends in the world of golf, chances are their acquaintances will include members of the nearby Bear Creek Golf Club. At the Jack Nicklaus designed course, Bear Creek golf has been enjoyed by many of the megastars of the sport. (More information about Canyon Lake golfing can be accessed via the Sports page link at CanyonLakeToday.com and info on Bear Creek golf can be found at www.BearCreekCalifornia.com ). In the local world of performing arts, Canyon Lake's Community Theater, and the Old Town Temecula Community Theater are shining stars. (Access performing arts links in the "Cultural Links" section above, on this page.) The Santa Rosa Plateau, and the plateau's nature preserve, are simply wondrous marvels of nature. (The Santa Rosa Plateau is up in the hills a short drive west of Murrieta, and the nature preserve comprises a good part of the plateau). More information about the Santa Rosa Plateau and the Nature Preserve can be found via www.17Mile.com . Canyon Lake has its own popular shopping area (the Canyon Lake Towne Center); and major shopping facilities have been growing throughout Southwest Riverside County in recent years. The Promenade Mall in Temecula is currently the area's largest. (The Promenade is what's known as a "regional mall".) A combination of indoor (traditional enclosed mall) and open-air "walking streets" of additional shopping make the Promenade a full-day's shopping experience. Other major shopping has been expanding near Canyon Lake in Murrieta, which is easily accessed from CanyonLake along both the 15 and 215 freeways.
A bit of the history of CanyonLakeToday.com, 17mile.com, and Bear-Creek.org: CanyonLakeToday.com is a community oriented website experience, designed to provide a variety of entertainment and useful links for the benefit of the local residents. Initially called Gate88.com, the site was started in the 1990's by Ton Suttle, a local real estate broker (California DRE #00672983) who originally used the site primarily to highlight new Canyon Lake real estate listing information. It rapidly evolved into a general Canyon Lake links page, used by a large number of Canyon Lakers (most of whom were, in the mid 1990's, just beginning to experience the internet). The name of Gate88 was chosen because it combined the word "Gate" - a reference to the gated residential portion of the community - with the year 88 (1988), which was the year Maria Suttle first began selling property in the community. Gate88 turned out to be a website name with a "ring" to it that was easy to remember, as many internet users soon discovered. Eventually "sister sites" were formed to include other upscale privately-owned communities, including www.bear-creek.org (another local upscale golf community) and www.17mile.com (with its focus on the various private association communities of large estate-sized parcels surrounding the nearby Santa Rosa Plateau), and www.CanyonLake.org, a local web link and phone number indexing site. |
